Luz, divino e arquitectura

Abstract

Este trabalho tem como objectivo chegar a uma conclusão clara e concisa da forma como a Luz molda não só o espaço físico da oração mas também a vivência do crente, segundo toda a carga simbólica e emotiva que o termo “divindade” transporta a cada um. Esta análise será feita através da interpretação das ferramentas utilizadas em Arquitectura para moldar, adaptar, e desenhar a entrada da luz e a iluminação do espaço litúrgico; da investigação da reforma e da alteração do paradigma do espaço cristão no séc. XX; e do estudo aprofundado de quatro igrejas cristãs em diferentes tempos e momentos da história. Procura-se reflectir e responder à questão: como é que a Luz pode remeter para o Divino, e de que forma a relação entre os dois pode ser preponderante para a apropriação e desenho de um determinado espaço de culto? Interpretar-se-á a posição referenciadora e preponderante que a luz natural1 assume nos espaços de culto, nomeadamente na religião cristã, segundo a sua carga simbólica relativa ao sagrado. Enquadrar-se-á a temática através dos diferentes movimentos artísticos em que a igreja cristã, nomeadamente a católica, se tornou protagonista revelando as suas obras e arquitectos/autores mais influentes e mais interventivos para o estudo em causa. Deste modo, crê-se que o estudo da iluminação neste tipo de edificação, aliado ao termo “divino” é um ponto fulcral não só para a compreensão dos seus espaços interiores, mas também como factor preponderante para a alteração da vivência e apropriação dos mesmos.

The aim of this essay is to reach a clear and concise conclusion on how the Light shapes not only the physical space for praying but also the experience of the believer, bearing in mind all the symbolic and emotional charge that the term “divinity” carries to every person. This analysis will be made through the interpretation of the tools used by Architecture to shape, adapt and sketch the entrance of light in the liturgical space, the research on the reform and change in the paradigm of the Christian space in the XX century, and the in-depth study of four Christian churches in different times and moments in History. We intend to reflect upon and answer to the question of how Light can refer to the Divine and how the relationship between the two can be dominant for the appropriation and design of a certain cult space. We will also interpret the predominant status the natural light1 assumes in cult spaces, namely in the Christian religion, according to its symbolic significance connected to the holy. We will framework the matter through the analysis of the different artistic movements in which the Christian Church had a central role, revealing its most influent and meaningful artwork and architects /authors for this study. Thus, we believe that the study of the lighting in this type of construction, together with the term “God” is a vital point not only for the understanding of the interiors but also as a major fact in changing the experience and appropriation of these spaces.
