A Venerável Ordem Terceira da Penitência de S. Francisco da Figueira da Foz, de 1714 a 1855

Abstract

A Ordem Terceira da Penitência de São Francisco da Figueira da Foz estava anexa ao convento de Santo António, fundado em 1527 por Frei António de Buarcos, com a aprovação da bula do Papa Clemente VII e com apoio de D. João III e António Fernandes de Quadros. O convento estava em terrenos da Casa de Tavarede que teria sido doado aos frades e continuava a receber a sua proteção. Na impossibilidade de determinar o seu ano de fundação, remontamos a sua história a 1714, quando se registou a primeira tomada de hábito. Como tantas outras ordens terceiras portuguesas, nunca foi alvo de investigação. Por esse motivo, o presente estudo procurou abordar o funcionamento da instituição no contexto da vila da Figueira da Foz, a sua atividade religiosa, as práticas assistenciais e as pessoas que a integraram: quantitativos, ritmos de entrada, distribuição por género, estado conjugal e inserção familiar, moradas e caracterização socioprofissional. Identificaram-se também os irmãos que ocuparam os diferentes cargos previstos nos estatutos. A análise dos estatutos foi essencial para conhecer as normas de funcionamento deste sodalício, os requisitos colocados aos que queriam ingressar como irmãos terceiros e as exigências que se lhes impunham. Mas ficar pelas normas é apenas delinear um ideal. Por isso foram sempre cotejadas com as práticas que se conseguiram perceber através dos registos de entradas e profissões de irmãos, de receitas e despesas, de inventários, de receituário médico e de óbitos e enterramentos.

The Venerable Third Order of Penance of St. Francis of Figueira da Foz was attached to the convento of Santo António, founded in 1527 by Friar António de Buarcos, with the approval of the bull of Pope Clement VII and with the support of the king João III and António Fernandes de Quadros. The convent was on the grounds of the House of Tavarede that would have been given to the friars and continued to receive its protection. Since its impossible to determine the year of its fundation, we will trace its history back to 1714, when the first receipt of habit was registered.Like so many other Portuguese third orders, this one was never investigated. For this reason, the present study sought to address the functioning of the institution in the context of Figueira da Foz, its religious activity, care practices and the people who had part of: numbers, entry rates, gender distribution, marital status and family insertion, addresses and socio-professional characterization. The brothers who held the different positions provided for in the statutes were also identified.The analysis of the statutes was essential to know the rules of operation of this sodalicium, the requirements placed on those who wanted to join as tertiaries and the requirements imposed on them. But restricting to the rules is just outlining an ideal. That is why they have always been compared with the practices that could be perceived through records of entries and professions of siblings, of income and expenses, of inventories, of medical prescriptions and of deaths and burials.
