Abstract

Abstract - The Role of the Pharmacist in Helping the Informal Caregivers: Over the past few years, world demographics have changed, into an aging worldwide population. Portugal fits this panorama, its percentage of elderly population being, considerably, bigger than its percentage of youth. Therefore, there has been an increase in the need for support of the elderly population and, because of the less in support if the elderly and their familis, the existence of informal caregivers has become more usual.On September 6th, the official status of informal caregivers was approved, through the Law n.º 100/2019, published on the journal "Diária da República". This intends to highlight the importance of the informal caregivers and define their rights and duties. So, it can be something for the informal caregivers base their activities. This paper includes a reflection about a current and impacting topic in our reality, that needs attention and recognition. So, in this paper we intend to address the challenges imposed on society and health professionals, due to the aging of the population. We will discuss some of the problems frequently found in the elderly population, describe the importance an informal caregiver holds whilst responsible for an elderly patient, and the role of pharmacists, as health professionals, in health care and education, will be highlighted. Thus, this monographic revision aims to analyze the status, linking the needs of the elderly and the importance of the pharmacist.

Resumo - O Papel do Farmacêutico no Auxilio ao Cuidador Informal: Ao longo dos últimos anos, ocorreram alterações demográficas acentuadas que se traduziram no crescente envelhecimento da população mundial. Portugal enquadra-se neste panorama, tendo uma percentagem de população idosa, consideravelmente, superior à população jovem. Por este motivo, as necessidades de auxílio ao idoso amplificaram-se e, podendo haver falta de apoios aos idosos e às famílias,o recurso ao cuidador informal tornou-se mais usual.A 6 de setembro de 2019, foi aprovado o estatuto do cuidador informal, através da Lei n.º 100/2019, publicada no Diário da República. Este novo diploma reconhece, por fim, a importância do cuidador informal e regula os seus direitos e deveres, sendo uma base para a atividade dos cuidadores informais.Este trabalho reflete sobre um tema atual e impactante na nossa realidade, que precisa de atenção e reconhecimento. Assim, neste trabalho pretendemos abordar os desafios impostos à sociedade e aos profissionais de saúde decorrentes do envelhecimento da população. Serão retratados alguns dos problemas frequentemente existentes na população idosa, será descrita a importância do cuidador informal no apoio ao doente idoso e será destacado papel do farmacêutico, como profissional de saúde, na assistência e na educação em saúde a ambos. Logo, o objectivo desta revisão monográfica é fazer uma análise do referido estatuto, interligando as necessidades da pessoa idosa e a importância do farmacêutico.
